What a Great Atlanta Race Weekend

October 25-29, 2007

Rudy and I left with the RV heading North to Atlanta on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 5:15 p.m. We drove until we were on the South side of Macon, GA and stopped for the night to sleep in a rest area.

Friday morning we were on the road again by 7:15 a.m., arriving at the Atlanta Motor Speedway at 9:30 a.m. We got our camp spot all set up, took showers and headed to the Track to see the sites and go to NASCAR NEXTEL CUP Series Practice. Our campsite was very close to the Track and we were grateful for the short walk this year. When I checked in for the Speedway Children's Charities Track Walk that was to take place on Saturday evening I found out that I was the highest fund raiser for the event. They gave me Suite Tickets for the Truck Race prior to the Walk. Jan and I enjoyed this perk (something we've never experienced before). While walking around the merchandise trailers we heard an announcement that Jimmie Johnson was going to be signing autographs at 2 pm to those holding a blue ticket. Rudy ran and got a ticket and then I got a ticket later and we each got two autographs from Jimmie and couple of pictures too.

While I was at Final Happy Hour Practice and Qualifying, Jan and GJ arrived at the Track. Later, Cully and Travis pulled in while we were sitting outside enjoying the cooler temperatures.

Janine arrived Saturday morning. Jan and I went to the Suite to watch the Truck Race and we had a great lunch served to us too. I went for the Speedway Children Charities Track Walk at 5 pm and was home by 6:45 just in time to eat a great dinner that Rudy made for all of us. We then again sat and enjoyed the cool of the night under the awning and visited until we couldn't hold our eyes open another minute.

RACE DAY: I was awake and up by 7 a.m. so off I went to the showers while everyone else was sleeping. Janine arrived around 8:30 and then the rest started to get up. Rudy again fixed up us all a great breakfast and prepared sandwiches to take to the Track for the Race. Janine and I took off for the Track around 11:30 so that we could go and take part in some of the merchandise/vendor activities before finding our seats. Once we arrived at our seats, Travis came and sat with us to watch the Pre-Race fun on the infield.

It was a great race and we had a great time visiting and hanging with our friends. Jimmie Johnson won his 7th Race in 2007 this day and is now only 9 points behind Jeff Gordon in the Chase for the Championship. With only three more races left, it is going to come down to the last race in Homestead where we will be there to witness the outcome.

After a grilled burger and potato feast that Rudy prepared for us, everyone packed up and left Rudy and me to some quiet time. We pulled out of the campsite on Monday morning at 7:30 and was back at home by 4:30 pm.

It was a great weekend and we are definitely looking forward to another one in Homestead, November 16-18.

See ya on the Road!
